A good point of sale (POS) system is the difference between guessing and knowing what your shop earns. If you are comparing options, use this checklist.
1. It must handle M-PESA properly
Most of your customers pay by M-PESA, so the system should record each payment against the sale. Otherwise you spend evenings matching phone statements to receipts.
2. Stock control that updates itself
Every sale should reduce stock automatically and warn you when items run low. This is how shops stop losing money to stock-outs and theft.
3. Works with the hardware you will use
Check that it supports a receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer, and that it runs on a computer or touchscreen terminal you can afford.
4. Reports you will actually read
Look for daily sales, best-selling items, profit and cashier activity reports that you can open on your phone.
5. Local support
Software fails at the worst times. Choose a provider who installs, trains your staff and picks up the phone. At Antro, we install and support our POS in Mombasa, Nairobi and beyond.
